Nestled on a ridge above the banks of the River Spey, The Easter Elchies House has been The Macallan’s spiritual home for almost three centuries. On the estate, Alexander Reid constructed the first authorized distillery in 1820, giving it the name Macallan in honor of an ancient church that had burned down in the fifteenth century. At the same time, Reid planted barley in the fields that around the rented home. During the long winter days, Reid would ferment and distill his surplus grains to create whisky, which he frequently sold to passing guests or consumed directly from the still.
